Spotify has started testing a personalised AI guide in the form of a “DJ” that “knows you and your music taste so well that it can choose what to play for you.” It appears to be one of the more fascinating uses of AI amid the current influx of AI-powered devices.

The DJ, who selects the music and offers comments, is one of the key elements of the radio music experience. Spotify is currently using AI to recreate the role just for you. This pocket feature allows user will receive a customised playlist of music from the DJ, along with AI-generated commentary on each song in a human-sounding voice.

The voice technology used by the DJ is from Sonantic AI, a business that Spotify bought last year. The actual words the DJ is saying, according to Spotify, are generated using a combination of sources, including generative AI technology from OpenAI (which is behind ChatGPT) and a writer’s room staffed with “music specialists, culture experts, data curators, and scriptwriters.”

What makes this feature different?

The fact that this service is based on radio, which many people moved to streaming to avoid, makes it particularly intriguing. The new DJ option on Spotify is essentially a mix between a playlist you’ve painstakingly selected and a radio station you have no control over. Interesting.

According to Spotify, the function will sift into some of your old favourites—maybe even resurfacing that song you haven’t listened to for years. It will then review what you might enjoy and deliver a stream of songs picked just for you.

In the US and Canada, DJ has already begun to roll out Spotify Premium subscribers.
