Hades is the first game to ever win the Hugo Award.

For those who are unfamiliar, the Hugo Award is a literary award that recognises the best in science fiction and fantasy writing and has traditionally focused on mediums other than gaming. Fortunately for gamers and those in the industry, the idea of creating a separate category for it had been floating around for a while and finally became a reality in 2021.

In accepting the award, Supergiant Games’ creative director and Hades writer Greg Kasavin said it was an honour to be the first video game awardee. “We grew up experiencing these classic works of science fiction and fantasy from Ursula K. Le Guin to Philip K. Dick and what have you,” he explained. “Of course, that’s when we first heard the Hugo Awards name as kids, so to have earned this distinction all these years later — especially alongside such an incredible slate of nominees, games of all shapes and sizes from teams big and small — it truly means the world.”
