This year we celebrate the 78th Golden Globe Awards and for the first time in history the nominations were announced virtually due to the Covid pandemic. As expected, the awards show has made history and headlines, both for positive and negative reasons. Women are making history this year as three women have been nominated for best director- the first time that more than one has been shortlisted in any single year.

Many British actors are featured in the nominations this year. Sacha Baron Cohen is nominated for his appearance in The Trial of the Chicago 7 and the Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Hugh Grant for best actor in The Undoing, and usurpingly The Crown appears in a vast majority of categories too, with it having the highest nominations (6) than any other TV show. Mank steals the most film nominations with 6, followed by The Trial of the Chicago 7 with 5.

Controversy has been noted, however. Netflix’s most streamed series ever, Bridgerton, is absent. Outrage has also been sparked over the limited series about a black rape victim in I May Destroy You which failed to have any recognition from the Golden Globes, despite the applause it received when it was released.

The awards show will take place in a couple of weeks on February 28th and will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who is returning for the fourth time after previously hosting in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
