McDonald’s France has partnered with Elium Studio for the past two years to develop a range of reusable tableware for its fast food restaurants.

This is in compliance with local laws mandating that restaurants with more than 20 seats must offer reusable and washable serving containers. The containers, which match the aesthetic of McDonald’s signature packaging, are made of Tritan, a BPA-free plastic resin that preserves the taste and smell of the food without the material being affected over time.

The range includes plastic cups for hot and cold drinks, French fry containers, and condiment holders, among other items. Elium Studio drew inspiration from ceramics and glassware to design the line, meticulously creating each item using hundreds of drawings, mock-ups, and prototypes. The design team placed a particular emphasis on the object’s vents, graining, and striations to ensure that they were highly durable and complimentary to the tasting experience.

French President Emmanuel Macron has applauded the initiative, saying, “The anti-waste law is not only the end of plastic straws. Look around you: in France, changes are at work to change our consumption patterns and reduce our waste. We are pushing to do it globally. Let’s change the game!”
