Manchester United and England forward Marcus Rashford has been the news lately after he had UK government U-turned on their decision to provide children school meals over the summer holiday. Rashford wrote an open letter to parliament asking them to reconsider their decision, to which Boris Johnston announced school lunches will be provided.

This news managed to travel the Atlantic Ocean to Jay-Z who has now signed the 22 year old to his Roc Nation Sport agency. This partnership covers the player’s philanthropy, PR and marketing, communications, digital strategy and commercial partnerships.

Whilst the deal with Rashford began back in April, it has been kept secret. Roc Nations’ director of brand strategy commented that: “We look for those figures who stand for something beyond just the sport that they play. What he did transcended race, transcended any social unrest that we’re experiencing. This was a 22-year-old young man who was saying: ‘No child should be going hungry in this country. That is unacceptable.’ Even if you were the meanest person in the world, it was an argument you just couldn’t fight against. He was able to resonate with so many people by just being himself.”

This isn’t the first partnership in sport for Roc Nation. They have also signed deals for big-name players like Romelu Lukaku and Kevin de Bruyne.
